How to analyze a stock — five steps, in order, written down

Most stock analysis fails at organization, not intelligence. This is the five-step order that works — each step has one output you write down before moving on.

The steps

  1. Explain the business in two sentences. Can't? You don't understand it yet — that's a finding.
  2. Score business quality — returns on capital, moat trend, management honesty. Scorecard.
  3. Set the valuation ceiling — earnings power × your hurdle − margin of safety. Calculator.
  4. Write three thesis breaks — measurable, dated, falsifiable.
  5. Check timing — the signal state, last. Screener free preview.

Do this five times and you'll never read another hot take the same way.

Where AI helps (and where it doesn't)

AI compresses steps 1–3 from days to minutes — summarizing filings, scoring consistently, computing the ceiling. AI cannot own steps 4–5: the breaks you accept and the timing you act on are yours. More: the full AI research workflow · Thai version: วิเคราะห์หุ้นด้วย AI
